Our founders: – Mike Cheney and Purna Sherpa Lama (my father).
Michael and Purna are the inspiration for our trekking operation and established the template, with Colonel Jimmy Roberts, for the original trekking experience in Nepal in the 1960s. Mike and Jimmy served with the British Gurkha regiment and are justifiably respected for establishing the first trekking company in Nepal in 1968.
Mike was responsible for organizing many of the early climbing expeditions in Nepal and Purna Sherpa Lama was a high altitude guide, trained under Mike for 30 years and became a lifelong friend and legend in his own lifetime.
Purna was well known in climbing circles, most famously as a cook on Chris Bonnington’s 1975 Everest Expedition and cook for Prince Charles when he trekked in Nepal.
Although Michael and Purna are no longer with us, their careful organisation and ethical, client centered philosophy have been passed down to me, Karma Sherpa Lama, Purna’s son and my wife Dawa Lhamu, who manage the company today.
Karma Sherpa Lama – the son of Purna Sherpa Lama and now the Managing Director of the company. As a member of the Trekking Agents’ Association of Nepal (TAAN) and the Himalayan Mountaineering Association (NMA) he makes sure ‘Exodus Trek and Expeditions Nepal’ is kept up to date with what is happening and developing in the trekking world in Nepal. Karma will also ensure that you have a safe and exhilarating visit to the land of snow and smiles – his home, Nepal.
Why Exodus Nepal?
We have 40 years’ experience of providing memorable trekking and mountaineering experiences for clients from all over the World. Our record is second to none.
Our trips are led by qualified, English speaking Nepali Mountain leaders who are rich in experience and rightly enthusiastic about their country and its cultural, scenic and wildlife diversity. They know the trails and local communities, and for the ‘Trekking Peaks’ and more serious mountains, they know the way to the top!
A Range of experiences
Whether you want day walks from Kathmandu or Pokhara, short treks in the foothills, more demanding 8-14 day circuit or ‘base camp’ treks, or even more adventurous treks including a thrilling summit attempt (and yes we do have leaders who have taken clients to the summit of Everest), we can provide the support team you need. We will organize fully supported camping treks or ‘tea house treks’ using our network of well-equipped mountain lodges.
Your safety is of paramount importance to us. We manage leader, guide and client ratios to provide individual support when required. Leaders and Guides are trained in Nepal’s Mountaineering schools and learn First Aid and customer service. Our Kathmandu office regularly communicates with trekking groups, providing weather and warning advice where relevant. Your safety is never undervalued.
